As a goalie I\u2019d want to stake my life on to win a game, well &#8211; not so much. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Furthermore, I\u2019m obviously not alone in the fact that I like Campbell. It seems that, even when he played poorly with the Edmonton Oilers this season, Oilers&#8217; fans continue to love him. I get it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><strong>Related: <a href=\"https:\/\/thehockeywriters.com\/maple-leafs-news-rumors-marner-samsonov-woll\/\">Maple Leafs News &amp; Rumors: Marner, Samsonov, Woll &amp; Blame<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Oilers Signed Campbell to a Big Contract During the Offseason<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>During the offseason, the Oilers needed a starting goaltender. So, they went out and signed Campbell to a big contract. General manager Ken Holland obviously believed and expected Campbell to come in and fill the role of the team\u2019s starting goalie. However, the fact of the matter is that Campbell&#8217;s performance has not lived up to the expectations set by his contract.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Jim Parsons Wrote About Campbell&#8217;s Contract in <em>The Hockey Writers<\/em><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In fact, <a href=\"https:\/\/thehockeywriters.com\/oilers-ugliest-free-agent-signings-since-2020\/\">in a recent post in <em>The Hockey Writers<\/em>,<\/a> Oilers&#8217; writer Jim Parsons wrote about Campbell\u2019s contract and his play with the team. He called the contract an &#8220;ugly&#8221; signing for the Oilers. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">When the Oilers signed Jack Campbell, I thought he was going to be the ideal goalie for them. That clearly hasn\u2019t been the case.<br><br>As part of \u2066<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/TheAthleticNHL?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@TheAthleticNHL<\/a>\u2069\u2019s \u201cWhat I got wrong\u201d series, I look at Campbell\u2019s miserable season \u2014 and awful game Monday. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/dEx5NnlCQz\">https:\/\/t.co\/dEx5NnlCQz<\/a><\/p>&mdash; Daniel Nugent-Bowman (@DNBsports) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/DNBsports\/status\/1638186841890508801?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">March 21, 2023<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Honestly, it&#8217;s true that a player&#8217;s performance can change over time. It&#8217;s also true that it might be too early to tell what Campbell\u2019s long-term success with the Oilers might be. However, no one can argue &#8211; and even his supporters don&#8217;t argue differently &#8211; that Campbell has not lived up to expectations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><strong>Related: <a href=\"https:\/\/thehockeywriters.com\/remembering-maple-leafs-goalie-jonathan-bernier\/\">Remembering Maple Leafs\u2019 Goalie Jonathan Bernier<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Oilers&#8217; Fans Continue to Support Campbell<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>What interested me were the comments of the Oilers&#8217; readers\/fans. They were interesting. First, they reminded me yet again why Campbell was one of my favourite Maple Leafs&#8217; players when he played here. Second, the comments made me wonder if Oilers&#8217; fans and Maple Leafs&#8217; fans were cut from the same cloth. <\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"729\" height=\"1000\" src=\"https:\/\/oldprof.nhltradetalk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/jack-Campbell-2.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1268\" srcset=\"https:\/\/oldprof.nhltradetalk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/jack-Campbell-2.jpeg 729w, https:\/\/oldprof.nhltradetalk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/jack-Campbell-2-219x300.jpeg 219w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 729px) 100vw, 729px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Jack Campbell, when he was with the Maple Leafs<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Oilers\u2019 fans might be totally different and far more forgiving than Maple Leafs\u2019 fans. They universally stuck up for Campbell. They disagreed with Parsons&#8217; post and noted that it was too critical and premature. They suggested that he should give Campbell more time to show his value.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><strong>Related: <a href=\"https:\/\/nhltradetalk.com\/takeaways-maple-leafs-loss-to-the-islanders\/\">3 Takeaways from Maple Leafs 7-2 Beat Down by the Islanders<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Oilers&#8217; Fans Didn&#8217;t Disagree with Campbell&#8217;s Play, But &#8230;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Specifically, the fans agreed that Campbell wasn&#8217;t &#8220;having a good season.&#8221; But one reader cautioned that &#8220;it&#8217;s too early to tell and he will have at least one more year to figure it out.\u201d The reader noted that \u201cIf he is still playing the way he is now a year from now, then people can jump on him. However, at this point, it&#8217;s too early.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another reader agreed with the first and noted that it was far too early to judge the Campbell contract. Specifically, \u201cFor this year alone, yeah you could argue it&#8217;s ugly. Talk to me again in a year and we&#8217;ll see how it looks then.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">You Gotta Love Oilers&#8217; Fans for Their Support<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Interesting. I have to appreciate that attitude of Oilers&#8217; fans. I\u2019m not so sure Maple Leafs&#8217; fans would be so supportive. The truth is that I too like Campbell and find him endearing as a person. He\u2019s human and his confidence is fragile. Meaning &#8211; he\u2019s just like the rest of us.\u00a0We all get it!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Still one of the good guys, no matter how poorly he\u2019s playing, fans love Jack Campbell.
