{"id":1469,"date":"2023-04-22T16:03:39","date_gmt":"2023-04-22T16:03:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/oldprof.nhltradetalk.com\/?p=1469"},"modified":"2023-04-22T16:03:40","modified_gmt":"2023-04-22T16:03:40","slug":"maple-leafs-game-3-marner-rule-book","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/oldprof.nhltradetalk.com\/index.php\/2023\/04\/22\/maple-leafs-game-3-marner-rule-book\/","title":{"rendered":"Maple Leafs Quick Hits Headed into Game 3: Marner &#038; Rule Book"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By Stan Smith<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In this edition of Toronto Maple Leafs Quick Hits, Stan Smith takes a look at what&#8217;s happening with and for the team as Game 3 looms tonight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Quick Hit One: Marner Tops Scoring After Two Games<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mitch Marner finds himself in first place in NHL scoring for the playoffs after two games.\u00a0His six points put him in a tie with Adam Fox of the New York Rangers. Marner has two goals to go along with his four assists, while Fox has six assists.\u00a0When there is a tie for points the tiebreaker is whichever player has the most goals. In this case, it is Marner that would win the tiebreaker.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Related: <a href=\"https:\/\/thehockeywriters.com\/7-thoughts-maple-leafs-win-04-20-2023\/\">7 Thoughts About the Maple Leafs\u2019 7-2 Game 2 Win<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Quick Hit Two: Four Maple Leafs Players Climbing All-Time Record Book<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Four players from the present team are among the 30 all-time Maple Leafs\u2019 scorers in the playoffs.\u00a0 Marner is tied with Nick Metz (1934-48) for 17th place with 39 points.\u00a0Auston Matthews is tied with Lanny McDonald (1973-81) and Dick Duff (1954-1965) for 20th place with 37 points.\u00a0William Nylander is all by himself in 25th place with 33 points.\u00a0Morgan Rielly is in 28th place overall, and 7th for defensemen with 29 points.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"700\" height=\"980\" src=\"https:\/\/oldprof.nhltradetalk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/william-nylander2.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-223\" srcset=\"https:\/\/oldprof.nhltradetalk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/william-nylander2.jpeg 700w, https:\/\/oldprof.nhltradetalk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/william-nylander2-214x300.jpeg 214w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">William Nylander, Maple Leafs Rookie Card<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Quick Hit Three: Maple Leafs&#8217; Slow Starts<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We have written previously about the Maple Leafs&#8217; tendency towards slow starts in games. It was a common theme for them down the stretch and carried through to the first two games in this series.\u00a0With the series returning to Tampa Bay, the Lightning will be playing before their home crowd. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That fact, coupled with the embarrassing loss they suffered in Game 2, fully suggests the Lightning will come out of the blocks with purpose in Game 3. It will be important for the Maple Leafs to survive the original onslaught we expect to see. Perhaps, they might even take advantage of it to look for opportunities to create odd-man rushes the other way.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Related: <a href=\"https:\/\/nhltradetalk.com\/maple-leafs-jekyll-hyde-samsonov-marner\/\">Maple Leafs\u2019 Quick Hits: Jekyll &amp; Hyde, Samsonov &amp; Marner<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Quick Hit Four: Penalties <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We have also discussed the importance of the Maple Leafs staying out of the penalty box. On the surface that seems obvious.\u00a0It is difficult to play winning hockey if you are short a player. Another reason is in the two games played the Maple Leafs have had a distinct advantage in High-Danger Scoring Chances and Expected Goals when the teams have played five-on-five. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to Naturalstattrick.com at five-on-five, Toronto has had 27 High-Danger Scoring Chances to Tampa\u2019s 12, or 70% of the High-Danger Chances.\u00a0The Maple Leafs have also had 62% of the Expected Goals.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Quick Hit Five: The NHL&#8217;s Definitions of Penalties<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On the topic of penalties, there has seemed to be an abundance of hooking and slashing penalties called in all of the series I have watched. Some of the hooking penalties I have seen have been in situations where a player has appeared to have simply lifted another player&#8217;s stick preventing him from playing the puck.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some of the slashing penalties have appeared to be players without the puck trying to knock the puck off of the stick of the player with the puck.\u00a0It has made me wonder exactly what the definition of hooking and slashing is in the NHL rulebook. Specifically, Matthew Knies had an odd call on him during Game 2.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">\u201cWe brought him in here for a reason.\u201d<br><br>Matthew Knies looks to jump into playoff action as the fallout from Michael Bunting&#39;s headshot will change both the Maple Leafs and Lightning&#39;s lineups in Game 2: <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/uZqDORt2qu\">https:\/\/t.co\/uZqDORt2qu<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/rxTzcp9Bvk\">pic.twitter.com\/rxTzcp9Bvk<\/a><\/p>&mdash; luke fox (@lukefoxjukebox) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/lukefoxjukebox\/status\/1648787650608758784?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">April 19, 2023<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Slashing and Hooking Penalty Definitions<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here are the pertinent parts of the rules for each penalty from the NHL rulebook.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>55.1 Hooking &#8211; Hooking is the act of using the stick in a manner that enables a player to restrain an opponent<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>61.1 Slashing &#8211; Slashing is the act of a player swinging his stick at an opponent, whether contact is made or not.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That\u2019s it.\u00a0Those are the rules.\u00a0Each rule does come with some further explanation.\u00a0The slashing rule does go on to say the following:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Non-aggressive stick contact to the pant or front of the shin pads, should not be penalized as slashing. Any forceful or powerful chop with the stick on an opponent\u2019s body, the opponent\u2019s stick, or on or near the opponent\u2019s hands that, in the judgment of the Referee, is not an attempt to play the puck, shall be penalized as slashing.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The hooking rule goes on to say the following:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>When a player is checking another in such a way that there is only stick-to-stick contact, such action is not to be penalized as hooking.&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u00a0A minor penalty shall be imposed on a player who impedes the progress of an opponent by \u201chooking\u201d with his stick. A minor penalty for hooking shall be assessed to any player who uses the shaft of the stick above the upper hand to hold or hook an opponent.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Rules Are Highly Interpretive<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Both of those rules seem extremely vague and open to interpretation.\u00a0The slashing rule even goes as far as to state \u201c<em>in the judgment of the Referee.\u201d <\/em>It is easy to see why there would be situations where the same play as seen by two different referees could be called differently.\u00a0To make matters even more complicated there are two referees in each game and each one of them could have a different interpretation of a certain rule.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I don\u2019t think knowing all of that helps us to understand what would and should be called.\u00a0It has to be extremely difficult for the players to know what to expect, as well as what they can or can\u2019t do.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We hope for some consistency in what is called or not called.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Related: <a href=\"https:\/\/oldprof.nhltradetalk.com\/index.php\/2023\/04\/21\/good-bad-ugly-maple-leafs-win-lightning-2\/\">THE GOOD, BAD, &amp; UGLY IN MAPLE LEAFS&#8217; GAME 2 WIN VS.
