In this edition of Toronto Maple Leafs Quick Hits, I’ll take a look at some of the news that’s emerging from the team. The Maple Leafs’ development camp was held and several young players showed well. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the same time, there’s work for new general manager (GM) Brad Treliving to engage. How is that going?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Maple Leafs Quick Hit News<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Item One: Klingberg and Liljegren<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The signing of John Klingberg might have a strong and positive potential impact on fellow Swede Timothy Liljegren’s career. Klingberg’s experience is valued by the team, and he could serve as a mentor to Liljegren. Additionally, the signing improves the team’s power play and opens up the possibility of having two strong units.<\/p>\n\n\n

Item Two: Roni Hirvonen’s Concussion<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Roni Hirvonen, one of the team’s top prospects, suffered a concussion during a scrimmage at the development camp. The hit was deemed clean but unexpected. Hirvonen’s recovery and long-term health are now the team’s focus. I’ll share more news as it comes in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Item Three: Impressive Camp for Young Goalies<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Artur Akhtyamov and Vyacheslav Peksa, two young Russian goalies, had impressive camps and showcased their skills. They will start the next season in Russia, prioritizing playing time and development. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Item Four: Albin Sundin’s Positive Impression<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Albin Sundin, an 18-year-old Swedish defenseman and camp invitee, made a good impression during the development camp. Although he is not related to Maple Leafs icon Mats Sundin, his father played in the NHL. Sundin will return to Sweden to play for Frolunda. Might the team offer him a contract?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Item Five: Prospects Matthew Knies and Nick Robertson<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The upcoming season presents an opportunity for Matthew Knies and Nick Robertson to showcase their potential. Knies has already shown his ability to compete at the NHL level, and the question is whether he can maintain that performance over a full season. Item Six: Samsonov Arbitration and Potential Goalie Moves<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The filing for arbitration by Ilya Samsonov opens a second buyout window for the Maple Leafs, increasing the likelihood of parting ways with goaltender Matt Murray. The team is expected to address the goaltending situation and make a decision on Samsonov and Joe Woll. Will the team consider another veteran goalie on the market?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

John Gruden has become the head coach of the Toronto Marlies in the AHL. He brings experience coaching youth teams and has worked with NHL coaches Barry Trotz and Jim Montgomery. Gruden emphasizes player development and aims to shape young players both athletically and personally. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Item Nine: Andreas Johnsson Reunites with Kyle Dubas in Pittsburgh<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Forward Andreas Johnsson, previously with the Maple Leafs, has signed with the Pittsburgh Penguins under former Maple Leafs GM Kyle Dubas. The one-year contract offers an opportunity for Johnsson to revitalize his career and contribute offensively to the Penguins. Good luck to Johnsson as he attempts a rebound season.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
