{"id":2693,"date":"2024-01-11T21:04:34","date_gmt":"2024-01-11T21:04:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/oldprof.nhltradetalk.com\/?p=2693"},"modified":"2024-01-11T21:04:34","modified_gmt":"2024-01-11T21:04:34","slug":"good-bad-ugly-maple-leafs-romp-sharks","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/oldprof.nhltradetalk.com\/index.php\/2024\/01\/11\/good-bad-ugly-maple-leafs-romp-sharks\/","title":{"rendered":"The Good, Bad, &#038; the Ugly in Maple Leafs 7-1 Romp Of Sharks"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By Stan Smith<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Toronto Maple Leafs made it a perfect four-for-four in \u201824 with their 7-1 win at home against the San Jose Sharks on Tuesday night.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With so much good to report about the Maple Leafs in this game and their recent stretch of games, I will get my Bad and Ugly out of the way first.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Related: <a href=\"https:\/\/oldprof.nhltradetalk.com\/index.php\/2023\/07\/31\/where-exactly-is-maple-leafs-robidas-island\/\">So Where Exactly Is the Maple Leafs\u2019 Robidas Island?<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Bad<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While it was an excellent game by the Maple Leafs and a total domination of the woeful Sharks, it was not by any means a perfect game.\u00a0San Jose did score a goal.\u00a0The \u201cBad\u201d in this game was not only the goal but the events leading up to the goal.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It started with what looked like a trip of David Kampf by Henry Thrun. I get it, the Maple Leafs were up 4-0 at the time and the entire game had been played in the San Jose end of the ice. I can see the referees going out of their way to not make things any harder on the Sharks.\u00a0The play then came down into the Toronto end and Anthony Duclair attempts to get around Simon Benoit.\u00a0Benoit does a good job knocking the puck off of Duclair\u2019s stick but the referee calls Benoit for hooking.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"710\" height=\"1000\" src=\"https:\/\/oldprof.nhltradetalk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/David.-Kampf.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-430\" srcset=\"https:\/\/oldprof.nhltradetalk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/David.-Kampf.jpeg 710w, https:\/\/oldprof.nhltradetalk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/David.-Kampf-213x300.jpeg 213w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 710px) 100vw, 710px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">David Kampf, Maple Leafs<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The NHL rule on hooking is very vague leaving it wide open for interpretation. It simply states \u201cthe act of using the stick in a manner that enables a player or goalkeeper to restrain an opponent.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Usually, you see a hook called if a player uses the blade of his stick as a hook, to tie up an opposing player&#8217;s stick or any part of his body.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">It Didn&#8217;t Look Like Hooking to Me<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I watch numerous replays of the play.\u00a0I even watched the slow-motion replay shown on the broadcast slowed down even more on my PVR and Benoit\u2019s stick never hooks any part of Duclair\u2019s stick or body.\u00a0It never comes close to the hands which is usually always called.\u00a0Benoit was using one hand to push Duclair; and, Duclair did turn in toward Benoit\u2019s push which could have resulted in a holding call if Benoit had not removed his hand.\u00a0In fact, Benoit pulled his hand back like a player does when he might have done something wrong and overreacted to it.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But, hooking?\u00a0Not even close.\u00a0Either the referee was reacting to Benoit\u2019s pulling his hand back or the referee was looking for anything to call on the Maple Leafs because the game was so lopsided.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"473\" src=\"https:\/\/oldprof.nhltradetalk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/IMG_1425-1024x473.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2682\" srcset=\"https:\/\/oldprof.nhltradetalk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/IMG_1425-1024x473.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/oldprof.nhltradetalk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/IMG_1425-300x138.jpg 300w, https:\/\/oldprof.nhltradetalk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/IMG_1425-768x354.jpg 768w, https:\/\/oldprof.nhltradetalk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/IMG_1425-1536x709.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/oldprof.nhltradetalk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/IMG_1425-2048x945.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Martin Jones, Maple Leafs<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As it is, the Sharks would score their only goal on the power play as Thrun would deflect a pass from Mikael Granlund past Martin Jones.\u00a0To add irony to injury on the next shift Benoit was obviously hooked by Justin Bailey with no call being made.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Related: <a href=\"https:\/\/oldprof.nhltradetalk.com\/index.php\/2023\/11\/08\/three-reasons-knies-thrives-with-matthews-marner\/\">Three Reasons Knies Thrives Playing with Matthews and Marner<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Ugly<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The only Ugly incident in the game also involved Benoit.\u00a0He got a stick across the nose by Scott Sabourin early in the third period.\u00a0Benoit went down in a heap on the play and stayed down as a referee blew the play dead.\u00a0Once the play was called dead, Benoit got up under his own steam and exited the game with blood streaming from his nose.\u00a0He did return to finish the game after getting some attention in the locker room. It would not surprise me if Benoit had a black eye or two the next day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Good<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Where to start?\u00a0It was a point night for Toronto. Mitch Marner along with the newly crowned $92-millionaire William Nylander made the most of it\u00a0 Marner had two goals and two primary assists, while Nylander had three assists in the game.\u00a0Altogether 13 Maple Leafs\u2019 players had at least one point in the game.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Mitch Marner<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With the four points, Marner moved past Maple Leafs\u2019 legend Frank Mahovlich into seventh place in all-time Toronto scoring.\u00a0Marner did so in 175 fewer games than Mahovlich.\u00a0He now has 598 points in 545 games played.\u00a0Marner needs 42 points to catch Ron Ellis for sixth place on the list.\u00a0With 44 games left in the season and Marner having scored more than a point a game in his career I think it is likely he will accomplish that feat before the end of the season.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">William Nylander<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Obviously having his new eight-year, $11.5 million deal in his back pocket did not faze Nylander at all or have any effect on his play.\u00a0His three points in the game put him in a tie for third in NHL scoring with David Pastrnak and Artemi Panarin at 57 points.\u00a0A few weeks ago I wrote that Nylander was on a 117-point pace for this season and I did not expect him to keep up that pace.\u00a0Well, now Nylander is scoring at a 123-point pace for the season.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Jake McCabe<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Talking about all-time Maple Leafs\u2019 scorers, Jake Mccabe jumped 18 spots from 432nd to 414th in Maple Leafs franchise history.\u00a0McCabe had the most productive night of his career scoring a goal and adding two assists.\u00a0If my research was correct, it was the second three-point night of McCabe\u2019s 536-game, 11-season career. His last three-point game was back in 2017 when he was playing for the Buffalo Sabres.\u00a0McCabe had a goal and two assists in a 5-4 loss to the Carolina Hurricanes.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Jake McCabe makes it 5-1! <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/LeafsForever?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#LeafsForever<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/cO9wU7UkjL\">pic.twitter.com\/cO9wU7UkjL<\/a><\/p>&mdash; Maple Leafs Wave (@LeafsWave) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/LeafsWave\/status\/1744903002576540003?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">January 10, 2024<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Early this season I expressed surprise at seeing Maple Leafs\u2019 Head Coach Sheldon Keefe using McCabe in the three-on-three overtime in a game. It appears that Keefe has found some offense in McCabe&#8217;s game.\u00a0McCabe did not register a single point in his first eleven games played this season.\u00a0After registering his first points on November 24th in Chicago, McCabe has gone on to score 14 points in 21 games.\u00a0That is a 54-point 82-game pace.\u00a0The most points McCabe has ever scored in his previous ten seasons in the NHL is 25.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is noticeable that McCabe has the green light to jump into the play and take more offensive chances; and, it seems to be adding an element to his game.\u00a0It will be interesting to see how that impacts his play in the future.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Morgan Rielly<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Morgan Rielly scored his fifth goal of the season which surpasses the four goals he had all of last season. Rielly has five points in his last three games and 16 points in his last 16 games.\u00a0At Rielly\u2019s present rate of production, he is three points off the scoring pace he had when he finished the 2018-19 season with 72 points, which was the best season of his career.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Related: <a href=\"https:\/\/oldprof.nhltradetalk.com\/index.php\/2023\/08\/02\/how-good-is-maple-leafs-joseph-woll\/\">How Good Can Maple Leafs\u2019 Joseph Woll Be in 2023-24?<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Simon Benoit<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is one thing I didn\u2019t see mentioned anywhere else.\u00a0One of the thirteen players to register a point in the game was Benoit when he registered the secondary assist on McCabe\u2019s goal.\u00a0That is Benoit\u2019s first point as a Maple Leaf in his 24th game played.\u00a0Benoit is becoming a fan favorite with his physical style of play.\u00a0He leads the Maple Leafs with 70 hits this season.\u00a0He started the season as the ninth or tenth defenseman on the Maple Leafs\u2019 depth chart but has earned a full-time role with the team.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Martin Jones<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We can\u2019t forget about Martin Jones, who has become Mr. Steady for the Maple Leafs in goal.\u00a0Jones didn\u2019t have a lot of work in this game with the skaters in front of him playing their best defensive hockey of the season. But he did make the saves when he needed to, especially in the third period when the Maple Leafs started to play a little loosy-goosy.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jones is now first in the NHL of goalies with 12 or more appearances with a Save Percentage of 0.934% and first in Goals-Against-Average with a 1.98 GAA.\u00a0He now has a better Win\u2019Loss record (8-3-0) than Joseph Woll\u2019s 8-5-1.\u00a0If Jones can keep playing at anywhere close to this level, he might just claim the starting role when Woll does return from LTIR.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What\u2019s Next?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Maple Leafs venture back into New York to take on the Islanders. Toronto lost their last game there 4-3. \u00a0After that, they play back-to-back home games on the weekend.\u00a0They host the high-flying Colorado Avalanche on Saturday night.\u00a0The Avs have lost just once in regulation in their last ten games posting an 8-1-1 record in that time.\u00a0On Sunday the resurging Detroit Red Wings come to town.\u00a0The Wings have won three of their last four games including a three-game sweep of the California teams on their recent West Coast trip.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While I am sure we will see Jones in goal on Thursday and Saturday, I have no idea who we might see in the net on Sunday.\u00a0Toronto sent Dennis Hildeby back to the AHL and the Marflies have announced he will start Friday night when the Marlies take on the Belleville Senators.\u00a0The Leafs have recalled Ilya Samsonov, who has not played in a game in two weeks. The Maple Leafs have announced Samsonov will back up Jones on Thursday but have said nothing beyond that.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"343\" height=\"206\" src=\"https:\/\/oldprof.nhltradetalk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/Dennis-Hildeby.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1420\" style=\"width:621px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/oldprof.nhltradetalk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/Dennis-Hildeby.jpg 343w, https:\/\/oldprof.nhltradetalk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/Dennis-Hildeby-300x180.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 343px) 100vw, 343px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Dennis Hildeby, Maple Leafs Prospect in Goal<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jones played both ends of their recent back-to-back games but that was with two days off before and after those games.\u00a0This time they will be playing four games in six nights.\u00a0I can\u2019t see Jones playing all four.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I can see the pros and cons of the Maple Leafs playing either Samsonov or Hildeby on Sunday.\u00a0A lot will depend on how the team performs against the Islanders and the Avalanche as well as how Hildeby performs against Belleville.
