The Toronto Maple Leafs seem to be hitting their stride as they gear up for the final stretch of the season. With their star trio of Auston Matthews, Mitch Marner, and William Nylander leading the charge, the Maple Leafs’ offense is firing on all cylinders. However, what’s even more promising is the recent surge in secondary scoring, with players such as Bobby McMann stepping up and Tyler Bertuzzi suddenly rediscovering his scoring touch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Players Are Returning, the Defense Looks Okay, and the Goalies Might Be Fine<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The return of Calle Jarnkrok further bolsters the forward group, potentially providing the depth needed for a deep playoff run. Mark Giordano has returned after missing several games with the death of his father. As well, Joseph Woll will be returning to the lineup today. He had a good showing with the AHL Toronto Marlies and seems healed from the high ankle sprain that kept him out for weeks. <\/p>\n\n\n

On the defensive end, while there were concerns earlier in the season, the unit has steadied. TJ Brodie has stepped up in Morgan Rielly’s absence. Timothy Liljegren, while slightly injured, and Jake McCabe are growing into the job. Simon Benoit has been a revelation, and the defense is far better than anyone expected. The fill-ins have played well. The team might only need a minor adjustment at the trade deadline rather than pursuing major overhauls.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Goalie Situation Seems Improved<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Between the pipes, Ilya Samsonov’s resurgence after a shaky start has provided stability. He and Woll could give the team a strong enough goalie tandem to carry them. And, Martin Jones has been solid when he’s been asked to play. Despite some lingering uncertainty, goaltending is unlikely to be a pressing concern come the trade deadline.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Reasons Why the Maple Leafs Have a Good Chance This Postseason<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Here’s why I believe the Maple Leafs have a strong chance of making the postseason.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Reason One: The Maple Leafs Have the Offensive Firepower<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The Maple Leafs have three elite offensive players (Matthews, Marner, and Nylander). This trio consistently delivers. The team has strong enough secondary scoring (Max Domi, John Tavares, and Bertuzzi). And the team is receiving support from players like McMann, Pontus Holmberg, Matthew Knies, and Nick Robertson. The four lines are playing better. This offensive depth gives the Maple Leafs a chance to compete with other playoff contenders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Reason Two: The Maple Leafs Are Showing Their Competitive Ability<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Riding their seven-game winning streak, the team now has 74 points in 57 games. They are in a solid position in the standings, sitting comfortably in third place in their division. Their recent winning streak demonstrates their ability to string together victories and solidify their postseason aspirations. Their confidence is growing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Reason Three: The Maple Leafs Can Benefit from Potential for Management Tweaks<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The team’s strong performance allows management to focus on making minor tweaks rather than major roster changes at the trade deadline. This stability and continuity within the roster gives the team a chance to go “all in” differently this season. Rather than fill in huge holes, the team can add a few needed players. <\/p>\n\n\n

The “all in” part means going all in WITH this team rather than roster changes near the end of the season. That allows the team to boost its growing chemistry and competitiveness as it pushes for a playoff berth. In short, the players who have brought the team to this point will be counted on to continue the run.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Bottom Line for the Maple Leafs Postseason Goal<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Overall, the Maple Leafs have a potent offense, improved defense, reliable goaltending, and a competitive standing in the league. This gives them a favorable outlook for making a successful postseason run. Now, they have to carry it through.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
