{"id":3143,"date":"2024-04-24T16:37:24","date_gmt":"2024-04-24T16:37:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/oldprof.nhltradetalk.com\/?p=3143"},"modified":"2024-04-24T16:37:24","modified_gmt":"2024-04-24T16:37:24","slug":"marlies-finish-regular-season-end-playoffs-coming","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/oldprof.nhltradetalk.com\/index.php\/2024\/04\/24\/marlies-finish-regular-season-end-playoffs-coming\/","title":{"rendered":"Marlies Finish Regular Season On Sour Note: Playoffs Coming"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>By Stan Smith<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Toronto Marlies lost their last three games of the regular season.\u00a0As a result, they not only blew a chance to finish in the top three thus avoiding the best-of-three play-in round, but they also lost home-ice advantage and have only one of the three games in Toronto.\u00a0Their first game of the play-in round is in Belleville against the Senators.\u00a0They return to Toronto on Friday for Game 2.\u00a0If necessary, the series returns to Belleville for game three on Sunday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Marlies finished the regular season with a so-so record of 34-26-10-2. That translates to a 0.556% points percentage, but it also means they won 34 games and lost 38, whether in regulation, overtime, or a shootout. That explains why they finished fifth in the seven-team North Division.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><strong>Related: <a href=\"https:\/\/oldprof.nhltradetalk.com\/index.php\/2024\/04\/20\/maple-leafs-wendel-clark-maple-leafs-chance\/\">Ex-Maple Leafs Wendel Clark Weighs in on Maple Leafs Chances<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Final Standings North Division<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table aligncenter\"><table><tbody><tr><td>Cleveland Monsters<\/td><td>88 points<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Rochester Americans<\/td><td>88 points<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Syracuse Crunch<\/td><td>87 points<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Belleville Senators<\/td><td>82 points<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Toronto Marlies<\/td><td>80 points<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Utica Comets<\/td><td>75 points<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Laval Rocket<\/td><td>74 points<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Note: Cleveland finished first because they had 40 regulation wins to Rochester\u2019s 39.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Top Scorers for the Marlies<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Joseph Blandisi was the Marlies&#8217; top overall scorer with 59 points (25G, 34A) in 70 games played. Logan Shaw led the way in goals with 30. He had one point less than Blandisi but only played 58 games. Kieffer Bellows and Alex Steeves finished second in goals with 27 each. Steeves was third in points with 57. Nick Abruzzese was fourth in overall scoring with 52 points, while Bellows rounded out the top five with 52 points.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"qme\" dir=\"ltr\">???? ???? <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/a97nQZgrkj\">pic.twitter.com\/a97nQZgrkj<\/a><\/p>&mdash; Toronto Marlies (@TorontoMarlies) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/TorontoMarlies\/status\/1783161472035541359?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">April 24, 2024<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Topi Niemela was the top-scoring defenseman on the team with eight goals and 31 assists for 39 points. William Villeneuve beat out Max Lajoie for second by one point (25 to 24).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dennis Hildeby was the best goalie, and it wasn\u2019t even close. Hildeby played 41 games, 24 more than Keith Petruzzelli who was second in appearances with 17. Hildeby\u2019s record was 21-11-7 with a 2.41 goals-against-average (GAA) and a 0.913 save percentage (SV%).\u00a0Luke Cavallin was second on the team in both SV% at 0.884 and GAA with 3.01.\u00a0Cavallin\u2019s record was 3-4-2 in nine appearances.\u00a0Petruzzelli was 6-8-2 with a 3.55 GAA and a 0.867 SV%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Looking Forward to the Marlies-Senators Series<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/mapleleafshotstove.com\/2024\/04\/23\/2024-calder-cup-first-round-playoff-preview-toronto-marlies-vs-belleville-senators\/\">Marlies and the Belleville Senators are extremely familiar<\/a> with each other, having played a total of ten games against each other this season. They split their games right down the middle, going 4-4-2. In the ten games, the Marlies managed to score one more goal than the Senators (31-30). I watched all ten of their games and can honestly say the Marlies have the more talented team.\u00a0But I\u2019m not sure if they have a better team.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The series could come down to a goaltender duel between Hildeby and Mads Sogaard. Sogaard\u2019s stats over the regular season are close to Hildeby\u2019s. He has a better won\/loss record, 18-9-3 in 32 appearances, but his GAA is just 0.04 higher at 2.45 GAA, and his Save Percentage is 0.03 higher at 0.916%.
