During the Toronto Maple Leafs\u2019 5-2 win over the Pittsburgh Penguins, both revamped top lines looked absolutely energized. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Matthews did not score a goal himself, but he sure helped others score. He registered two assists, and he was dominant. He was plus-3 on the night. Nylander scored and added an assist. <\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"700\" height=\"980\" src=\"https:\/\/oldprof.nhltradetalk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/auston-matthews-rc.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-215\" srcset=\"https:\/\/oldprof.nhltradetalk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/auston-matthews-rc.jpeg 700w, https:\/\/oldprof.nhltradetalk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/auston-matthews-rc-214x300.jpeg 214w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Auston Matthews Upper Deck RC <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Although the focus in last night&#8217;s win might have been on the first line of Matthews, Nylander, and Michael Bunting, the stars of the victory were the second line of Tavares, Marner, and Alex Kerfoot. But honestly, both lines were energized in ways they had not been in many games this season.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It would seem that Maple Leafs\u2019 head coach\u2019s decision to separate Matthews and Marner, at least for one night, was a stroke of genius.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><strong>Related: <a href=\"https:\/\/oldprof.nhltradetalk.com\/index.php\/2022\/11\/15\/mitch-marner-shares-emotion-moment-with-jake-muzzin\/\">MITCH MARNER SHARES EMOTION MOMENT WITH HIS FRIEND JAKE MUZZIN<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Prior to the Game, Matthews Commented About Playing with Nylander<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In an interview prior to last night&#8217;s game, included in the video below, Maple Leafs\u2019 Hart Trophy-winning center Matthews discussed being reunited on a line with Nylander. His take was that the twosome had built up considerable chemistry from their time playing together in the past. Therefore, to Matthews\u2019 mind, that chemistry simply doesn&#8217;t ever really go away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Matthews also noted that he wouldn\u2019t change his style much from when he was playing with Marner. Maybe not, but he seemed more of an assist guy tonight that the Rocket Richard Trophy winner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"s2nPlayer-4QqIuuJRvO-2364286-11057\" data-type=\"single\"><\/div><script type=\"text\/javascript\" src=\"https:\/\/embed.sendtonews.com\/player2\/embedcode.php?SC=4QqIuuJRvO-2364286-11057&amp;autoplay=on\" data-type=\"s2nScript\"><\/script>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Matthews Generally Makes Some Specific Points<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Matthews specifically noted that he and Nylander have a ton of experience playing together &#8211; just not recently. During that time, Matthews noted that \u201cI think the chemistry that we&#8217;ve developed in the past \u2026 really doesn&#8217;t go away too quickly.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What makes it so easy for Matthews to play with Nylander is that \u201cobviously (Nylander is) a really special player.\u201d However, for Matthews, Nylander is also \u201ca lot of fun to play with.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Their goal is quite vague, but as Matthews says it&#8217;s simply to \u201ctry to work off each other and create as much as we can up there.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><strong>Related: <a href=\"https:\/\/nhltradetalk.com\/maple-leafs-takeaways-win-over-penguins\/\">Five Maple Leafs Takeaways in 5-2 Win Over the Penguins<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What Makes Nylander and Matthews a Special Combination<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Finally, according to Matthews, they feed off each other by \u201cjust trying to move into spaces so we can utilize each other.\u201d As you listened to Matthews talk, it&#8217;s easy to see that there\u2019s no organized structure to their play.
