{"id":800,"date":"2022-12-15T15:55:27","date_gmt":"2022-12-15T15:55:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/oldprof.nhltradetalk.com\/?p=800"},"modified":"2022-12-15T15:55:27","modified_gmt":"2022-12-15T15:55:27","slug":"good-bad-ugly-maple-leafs-rout-ducks","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/oldprof.nhltradetalk.com\/index.php\/2022\/12\/15\/good-bad-ugly-maple-leafs-rout-ducks\/","title":{"rendered":"The Good, the Bad, &#038; the Ugly In Maple Leafs&#8217; 7-0 Rout of Ducks\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>By Stan Smith<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On Tuesday night the Toronto Maple Leafs did what they should do.\u00a0They dominated a team they should dominate, something they have struggled to do in the past.\u00a0Their 7-0 win over the last-place Anaheim Ducks gives Maple Leafs\u2019 fans hope that this season\u2019s team is indeed different from past versions.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"s2nPlayer-O6I12dnsw6-2421513-11057\" data-type=\"single\"><\/div><script type=\"text\/javascript\" src=\"https:\/\/embed.sendtonews.com\/player2\/embedcode.php?SC=O6I12dnsw6-2421513-11057&#038;autoplay=on\" data-type=\"s2nScript\"><\/script>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Good<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The first \u201cGood\u201d is the fact that, as I noted in the opening, the Maple Leafs soundly defeated a team they should beat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Five of the six goals scored came from outside of the top six forwards. Ten of the fourteen assists awarded in the game also came from outside of the top six forwards.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><strong>Related: <a href=\"https:\/\/oldprof.nhltradetalk.com\/index.php\/2022\/12\/12\/ex-maple-leafs-aube-kubel-kase-ritchie\/\">EX-MAPLE LEAFS AUBE-KUBEL, KASE &amp; RITCHIE: HOW THEY\u2019RE DOING?<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Three Point Club<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Two of the newest additions to the Maple Leafs\u2019 lineup assisted on three goals.\u00a0Righthanded defenseman <strong>Conor Timmins<\/strong> recently acquired in a trade with the Arizona Coyotes, assisted on the first three goals the Maple Leafs scored in the game.\u00a0With all of the records the team has set recently, it makes me wonder if that may be a record of some kind.\u00a0Timmins was also plus two in the game and had two takeaways.\u00a0He now has four assists in his first six games with the Maple Leafs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Have a night Buds \ud83d\udc4f <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/BfUGUAkBps\">pic.twitter.com\/BfUGUAkBps<\/a><\/p>&mdash; Toronto Maple Leafs (@MapleLeafs) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MapleLeafs\/status\/1602871452650569728?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">December 14, 2022<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>I realize it is a really small sample size but if Timmins can remain healthy, something he has had trouble doing in the past, it appears that the 6-foot-2 24-year-old St. Catharines native might be a good pickup for Maple Leafs GM Kyle Dubas.\u00a0At the very least, having a new player get the start Timmins has had is a lot better than having him struggle out of the gate.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Pontus Holmberg<\/strong>, a 2018 sixth-round draft pick by Kyle Dubas, also assisted on three goals in this game. Whereas Timmins was in on the Maple Leafs\u2019 first three goals, all three of Holmberg\u2019s assists came on the team\u2019s last three goals.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Two Point Club<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Alex Kerfoot<\/strong> doubled his goal production for the season, from two to four, with a pair of almost identical snipes in the game. While Kerfoot has been his usual sound player defensively, he has struggled to put the puck in the net this season.\u00a0With a $3.5M cap hit, the Maple Leafs need some offensive production to go along with Kerfoot\u2019s defensive game. Hopefully, this is just what he needs to get his offence headed in the right direction.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Pierre Engvall<\/strong> is another bottom-six forward for the Maple Leafs that has been playing solidly without the puck but has struggled with the puck this season. After scoring 15 goals and finishing the season with 35 points in 2021-22, it was hoped Engvall could take the next step and fill the void left by the departed Ilya Mikheyev.\u00a0Until now, that hasn\u2019t happened.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"374\" height=\"524\" src=\"https:\/\/oldprof.nhltradetalk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/pierre-engvall.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-201\" srcset=\"https:\/\/oldprof.nhltradetalk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/pierre-engvall.jpeg 374w, https:\/\/oldprof.nhltradetalk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/pierre-engvall-214x300.jpeg 214w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 374px) 100vw, 374px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Pierre Engvall Upper Deck RC (Maple Leafs(<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Engvall\u2019s nice cross-ice setup of Kerfoot\u2019s first goal that opened the scoring in the game, and his nice shot that beat Duck\u2019s goalie Lukas Dostal in the third period to put the Maple Leafs up 6-0 is more of what the team expected of Engvall this season. Engvall needs to build off of that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Rasmus Sandin<\/strong> had two assists in the game.\u00a0That gives him five points in his last four games.\u00a0The confidence that Sandin is presently playing with is obvious. He&#8217;s making things happen with the puck while still playing a strong defensive game.\u00a0Sandin has played over twenty minutes a game in six games straight and in nine of his last ten games. He is an amazing plus-twelve in those ten games.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Mitch Marner <\/strong>stretched his consecutive points streak to 23 games with two assists in the game. Marner has 31 points in those 23 games and has scored eight goals in his last nine games.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>John Tavares<\/strong> scored a goal and added an assist in the game to get him back to exactly a point-a-game pace for the season.\u00a0Tavares now has 14 goals, 16 assists, and 30 points in 30 games.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><strong>Related: <a href=\"https:\/\/thehockeywriters.com\/maple-leafs-news-rumors-samsonov-marner-tavares-vesey\/\">Maple Leafs News &amp; Rumors: Samsonov, Marner, Tavares &amp; Vesey<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Zero Goals Against Club<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>This is a one-man club and <strong>Ilya Samsonov<\/strong> is the only member.\u00a0He stopped all 25 shots he faced to post his second shutout in as many games.\u00a0Samsonov has not allowed a goal in December.\u00a0The last goal he gave up was at 7:26 of the second period on November 30th against the San Jose Sharks. Samsonov has now gone just shy of 153 minutes without allowing a goal.\u00a0 <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">No shocker here \u2b50\ufe0f<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Molson_Canadian?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@Molson_Canadian<\/a> | <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/LeafsForever?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#LeafsForever<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/dzWdhY8m9a\">pic.twitter.com\/dzWdhY8m9a<\/a><\/p>&mdash; Toronto Maple Leafs (@MapleLeafs) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MapleLeafs\/status\/1602866487056027648?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">December 14, 2022<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>In December, he faced 71 shots and stopped them all.\u00a0Samsonov remains undefeated at home this season with an 8-0 record\u00a0 He&#8217;s one shy of the record for games played from the beginning of the season without a defeat set by Bruce Gamble way back in 1968.\u00a0According to Quanthockey.com Samsonov leads the league in save percentage (.939) and goals against average (1.70) for goalies that have played ten or more games this season.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Bad<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>I struggled to find anything bad in this game.\u00a0I hate to harp on something, and I realize the referees have a difficult and thankless job, but once again I found there were a lot of obvious calls missed in this game on both sides, and some cheesy calls that were made. An obvious accidental bump that was called interference and a player getting called for tripping because a player stepped on his stick were two of the penalties that were called.\u00a0I saw three obvious trips and two high sticks that were not called.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Ugly<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>How can the Anaheim Ducks be this bad?\u00a0In 30 games they have only ONE regulation win.\u00a0Looking over their roster, they don\u2019t have a lot of talent up front.\u00a0Calder trophy finalist Trevor Zegras and Canada Junior standout Mason McTavish appear to be their most talented forwards. After that, they have several middling players like Troy Terry, Adam Henrique, Ryan Strome, Frank Vatrano, and Jakob Silfverberg.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Their defence on paper doesn\u2019t look bad with John Klingberg, Kevin Shattenberg, Cam Fowler, and Dimitry Kulikov as their top four. John Gibson, who was once considered elite, should not be this bad at only 29 years of age.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I did notice that the Ducks have over $20 million in current cap space accordion to Capfriendly.com.\u00a0In a\u00a0 league where 50% of the teams are spending right to the cap, or above it once you figure in LTIR contracts, and 26 of the 32 teams are within $3 million of the league\u2019s salary cap, maybe the Ducks are an example of \u201cYou get what you pay for.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But, one regulation win?\u00a0 It doesn\u2019t get any uglier than that.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><strong>Related: <a href=\"https:\/\/nhltradetalk.com\/three-takeaways-maple-leafs-win-over-ducks\/\">Three Takeaways from Maple Leafs\u2019 7-0 Win Over the Ducks<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Toronto Maple Leafs beat the Anaheim Ducks 7-0.
