{"id":889,"date":"2022-12-28T17:41:44","date_gmt":"2022-12-28T17:41:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/oldprof.nhltradetalk.com\/?p=889"},"modified":"2022-12-28T17:41:44","modified_gmt":"2022-12-28T17:41:44","slug":"good-bad-ugly-maple-leafs-win-vs-blues","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/oldprof.nhltradetalk.com\/index.php\/2022\/12\/28\/good-bad-ugly-maple-leafs-win-vs-blues\/","title":{"rendered":"The Good, the Bad, &#038; the Ugly in Maple Leafs&#8217; 5-4 Win vs. Blues"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>By Stan Smith<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Toronto Maple Leafs came out of the Christmas Break with a ragged but successful 5-4 overtime win over the Blues in St. Louis.\u00a0The win halted a two-game road losing streak and raised their record to 22-7-6 for the season.\u00a0The Maple Leafs became the third team in the NHL to reach the 50-point. plateau.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"s2nPlayer-7z2kp3PFci-2448133-11057\" data-type=\"single\"><\/div><script type=\"text\/javascript\" src=\"https:\/\/embed.sendtonews.com\/player2\/embedcode.php?SC=7z2kp3PFci-2448133-11057&#038;autoplay=on\" data-type=\"s2nScript\"><\/script>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Good<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">William Nylander<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>I have to start with William Nylander\u2019s amazing winning goal in overtime.\u00a0Nylander showed his strength, his skating ability, especially his acceleration, and his scoring prowess, all in one play. He outmuscled Vladimir Tarasenko, stripped him of the puck, broke in alone on Jordan Binnington, faked a shot, and deposited a backhand into the top of the St Louis net.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"700\" height=\"980\" src=\"https:\/\/oldprof.nhltradetalk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/william-nylander2.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-223\" srcset=\"https:\/\/oldprof.nhltradetalk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/william-nylander2.jpeg 700w, https:\/\/oldprof.nhltradetalk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/william-nylander2-214x300.jpeg 214w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">William Nylander, Maple Leafs Rookie Card<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>The goal was Nylander\u2019s team-leading 21st of the season and his 40th point.\u00a0He is now on pace to score 49 goals and 94 points in 2022-23.\u00a0A 50-goal season is not out of the realm of possibility for Nylander.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nylander has a four-game goal streak going and has a total of four goals and seven points in those four games.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><strong>Related: <a href=\"https:\/\/nhltradetalk.com\/three-takeaways-in-maple-leafs-5-4-ot-win-vs-blues\/\">Three Takeaways in Maple Leafs\u2019 5-4 OT Win vs. Blues<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Calle Jarnkrok<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>A lot has been made of the Maple Leafs&#8217; need for a top-six left winger. Calle Jarnkrok just might be able to fill that role.\u00a0Janrkrok scored a goal and added two assists in the game to give him a total of eight points in his last seven games since being moved up to the left wing alongside John Tavares and Mitch Marner.\u00a0Jarnkrok also did the heavy lifting on a shorthanded goal by Alex Kerfoot to put the Maple Leafs up 3-1 early in the second period.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The 31-year-old Jarnkrok has never scored more than 16 goals or collected more than 35 points in his 600+ game career.\u00a0But, he has never played with the top-six talent the Maple Leafs have. At least he hasn&#8217;t done it for any length of time. It will be interesting to see if he can keep this up over an extended period of time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Pontus Holmberg<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Since he was originally called up in early November Pontus Holmberg has played 20 games for the Maple Leafs. Despite playing exclusively fourth-line minutes and only scoring two goals and eight points in those 20 games, Holmberg has played some solid hockey.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I have mentioned before that Holmberg appears to play much bigger than his 5-10, 175 pounds.\u00a0I want to bring attention to one Holmberg shift late in the first period when he is fighting along the boards behind the Maple Leafs\u2019 net. He was battling for the puck with 6-1, 205-pound Ryan O\u2019Reilly. Not only did Holmberg handle himself well in the battle, but he also bounced O\u2019Reilly around pretty well in the exchange.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Bad<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Ilya Samsonov<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Similar to his last start, which ended in a 4-3 win over the Philadelphia Flyers, Ilya Samsonov made some really nice saves in this game. But he also allowed some questionable goals.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The first goal of the game was not all on Samsonov.\u00a0Conor Timmins, Jamie Benn, and David Kampf were all battling two Blues players behind the Maple Leafs\u2019 net, leaving Alexey Toropchenko alone in front of the net.\u00a0Alex Kerfoot and Pierre Engvall were doing their jobs covering the St. Louis defensemen at the blue line.\u00a0 <\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1000\" height=\"600\" src=\"https:\/\/oldprof.nhltradetalk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/Ilya-Samsonov-Maple-Leafs-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-464\" srcset=\"https:\/\/oldprof.nhltradetalk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/Ilya-Samsonov-Maple-Leafs-1.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/oldprof.nhltradetalk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/Ilya-Samsonov-Maple-Leafs-1-300x180.jpg 300w, https:\/\/oldprof.nhltradetalk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/Ilya-Samsonov-Maple-Leafs-1-768x461.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Ilya Samsonov, Maple Leafs<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>The puck comes free to Toropchenko in front of the net, but he fans on the puck.\u00a0When the puck goes to Toropchenko, Kerfoot leaves his position in an attempt to prevent Toropchenko from playing the puck.\u00a0The puck squirts off of Toropchenko\u2019s stick right to Logan Brown.\u00a0 Brown passes the puck to the player Kerfoot left open, Callen Rosen, who scores. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I don\u2019t blame Kerfoot on the play. He had to make a tough choice once Toropchenko was left alone.\u00a0To me, Kampf should have been more aware of Toropchenko being open and left the board battle up to Benn and Timmins to cover him.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><strong>Related: <a href=\"https:\/\/thehockeywriters.com\/reports-maple-leafs-tavares-decline-exaggerated\/\">Reports of Maple Leafs\u2019 Tavares Decline Are Exaggerated<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Samsonov Was Somehow Face First in the Crease<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Samsonov\u2019s role in the goal was his positioning. He somehow ended up on his stomach on the ice leaving the complete top half of the net wide open. He wasn\u2019t interfered with, or bumped by a player on either team. It appears he just lost his balance.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I don\u2019t put any of the blame on Samsonov for the second or the fourth St. Louis goals.\u00a0The second goal was a shot by O\u2019Reilly that ramped off of Justin Holl\u2019s stick, and changed direction, catching Samsonov off guard.\u00a0Samsonov never saw the fourth goal as he was completely screened by Robert Thomas and Jordie Benn.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1000\" height=\"600\" src=\"https:\/\/oldprof.nhltradetalk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/Ilya-Samsonov-Maple-Leafs.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-462\" srcset=\"https:\/\/oldprof.nhltradetalk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/Ilya-Samsonov-Maple-Leafs.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/oldprof.nhltradetalk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/Ilya-Samsonov-Maple-Leafs-300x180.jpg 300w, https:\/\/oldprof.nhltradetalk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/Ilya-Samsonov-Maple-Leafs-768x461.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Ilya Samsonov and Matt Murray have given the Maple Leafs solid goalie play.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>The third St. Louis goal that tied the game at three in the third period was one that Samsonov should have had. It was a hard slapshot by Justin Faulk. However, it was an unscreened shot from 40 feet out. It wasn&#8217;t the type of shot that should have ended up in the net.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In Samsonov\u2019s last three starts he has allowed 12 goals on 81 shots for a .852% save percentage. Similar to last season, the Maple Leafs have been able to overcome shaky goaltending to win two of Samsonov\u2019s last three starts.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Ugly<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The Ugly part of this game was watching Zach Aston-Reese spitting out blood after taking a high stick from Brandon Saad with just under two minutes left in the third period with no call being made. I can understand referees and linesmen (linesmen can call high-sticking penalties) missing calls like this if they happen away from the play, but the puck was at Aston-Reese\u2019s feet when it happened.\u00a0 <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Maple Leafs should have had a four-minute power play on the play.\u00a0As it was Nylander made the non-call moot for the Maple Leafs with his overtime goal.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What\u2019s Next?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The Maple Leafs travel to Arizona to take on the 12-16-5 Coyotes. There they will try and avenge their 4-2 loss to the Coyotes back in October.\u00a0They then close out 2022 in Colorado on New Years\u2019 Eve.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It was announced that both Morgan Rielly and Rasmus Sandin took part in the Maple Leafs\u2019 morning skate prior to the Blues\u2019 game and both appear close to returning.
