In the NHL, there are lots of times when trade talks often overshadow player loyalty. For me, Max Domi is an interesting example. I have to believe from watching and listening to what’s transpired as he’s signed with and played for the Toronto Maple Leafs that he is a player who has a genuine desire to be with the team.

Is It Time to Re-Sign Him to a Long-Term Contract?

Despite the ebb and flow of his analytics, I believe there’s a case for the Maple Leafs to prioritize re-signing Domi to a team-friendly contract. At 28, Domi brings a versatile presence to the ice, contributing both as a left and right-winger. He can also play center, which he’s done with the team’s third line.

His offensive capabilities, evident in his 24 points (four goals and 20 assists) in 47 games, is far from earth-shattering. However, he’s shown he can score when he’s put in an offensive position to do so.

Domi is also willing to play a physical game, and that makes him a valuable asset. While his current net rating might not be stellar, he has the potential for improvement. He also brings a ton of intangibles to the table. For example, similar to Calle Jarnkrok, he can play anywhere in the lineup. He also brings a positive value to the locker room which is also an extra layer of value.

If Domi Wants to Stay at $2.1 Million. Sign Him Up

In The Athletic‘s analytical analysis (called Player Cards), Domi is rated at a market value of $2.5 million. Given that Jarnkrok is signed for $2.1 million, I’d suggest that the Maple Leafs should explore re-signing Domi to a contract in the range of $2.1 million per season. It’s team-friendly, but it’s not embarrassingly low either.

It’s similar to contracts signed in the past for players of similar caliber. The potential for a long-term partnership between Domi and the Leafs could yield benefits beyond the stat sheet. The bottom line is that I would love to see him in a Maple Leafs uniform for his career if he would do so for the right price.
